Military Community Thinks About Local Marines In Libya

2,200 marines in the 26th MEU, made up of Cherry Point, Camp Lejeune and New River Marines, joined the international forces Sunday in the fight against Libyan leader Moammar Ghadaffi.

AV-8B harrier jets from Cherry Point launched strikes against Ghadaffi's ground forces and air defenses Sunday morning. Retired marine Brantley Kearney says as a christian nation it's appropriate for the United States to help, he just hopes it doesn't last too long.

"I hope it's not an extended commitment, we're already spread so thin with them in Afghanistan and Iraq, and now we're in Libya. I just pray that it's the right thing for us to do," said Kearney.

The 26th MEU deployed in late august.
