Schools Announce Hurricane Makeup Days, Reopening

Lenoir County school officials have announced two makeup days because of Hurricane Irene.

School will be held on Saturday, September 10 and Wednesday, November 23. Both will be "early out" days.

Meanwhile, Tyrrell County has announced school will resume there on Friday, September 9. County officials say students should be ready for buses at the normal times. There was extensive damage to five Tyrrell County schools during Hurricane Irene.

Below is the information on the Lenoir County Schools website:

"As you are aware, we have missed four school days due to Hurricane Irene. Rochelle Middle School has missed a total of six days. In a conference call with Governor Perdue and other state officials, hurricane affected districts were asked to make up days when there were opportunities in the calendar to do so. Therefore, we will make up two of the missed days on Saturday, September 10th and Wednesday, November 23rd. Both days will run on an early out schedule. We will ask the State to waive the remaining days missed due to the hurricane. I understand that neither of these days are convenient for many of you, however, I ask that everyone work together to make these days as productive as possible."

I don't see why they should make up any days.the test have been dumbed down so more will pass.today it's more of baby sitting than learning.the sad fact is that alot of them will work in low paying jobs, welfare, prison ETC.

The test have not been dumbed down. They are more challenging than ever. Teachers work to make sure evey child has a chance to succeed. As a teacher we need everyday we can get to teach the curriculum.

I checked the LCPS calendar and Sat isn't one of the days slotted for a makeup day. If he could have the other days missed waived, why not have them all waived?

Saturday is being used because even though it wasn't slotted, you can use Saturdays if it falls at the end of a week that had 4 or less school days, and when adding the Saturday it cannot be more than 5 days. If you look at the calendars they are full of protected teacher workdays, which makes it very limited in the days (M-F) that may be used. Also, it is prudent of the school system to make the days up in the next couple of months as the winter season is right around the corner and some of the other make-up days may need to be used for snow days.

@Mom, I understand what you said, but I still wonder why the school board didn't file to have all the days waived. It is my understanding if your area is declared a federal disaster area, you can have the days wiaved.
