Lejeune Marine Killed In Afghanistan Combat

On the same day that a Marine from New River is being laid to rest in South Carolina, the Pentagon announces another local casualty from the fighting in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department says 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Robert Greniger of Greenfield died Tuesday while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province.

Greniger was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion at Camp Lejeune.

Greniger's mother says the Marine switched units so he could be in Afghanistan.

Teresa Greniger tells The Associated Press her son was "very proud" to be a Marine and wanted to serve in Afghanistan.

Today in Fort Mill, South Carolina Staff Sgt. Thomas Dudley was laid to rest. The 29-year-old old who was stationed at New River was on his sixth deployment when he was killed last week in Afghanistan.
