Havelock leaders will take an important step forwards towards construction of a new city hall.
Democratic Rep. G.K. Butterfield will visit Havelock Wednesday to announce a $1.7 million loan and a $100,000 grant for a new city hall. The event is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
Havelock officials say the plans for the new city hall are still in the design phase, but crews will build it right next to the current city hall. Once the new building is completed, the old facility will be demolished. A city spokesperson says Havelock opted to build new because it would cost nearly as much to renovate the current city hall. Doing so would not extend the life of the facility to the same expectancy of a new building.
Crews have already completed a soil test to begin construction. The test discovered contaminants that must be removed before building takes place.
