Today was the first court appearance for former State Representative Stephen LaRoque of Kinston.
He went before a federal judge in Raleigh this morning.
LaRoque entered the courtroom around 9:00 a.m. His attorney talked with WITN and other media. He maintains his client was not involved in any wrongdoing.
The attorney said the next court date had not been set.
LaRoque resigned from his seat representing parts of Lenoir, Greene and Wayne Counties last month. LaRoque was indicted on charges of stealing money from a federal loan program and engaged in other transactions related to property derived from unlawful activity.
Questions had been raised in recent months about his involvement in East Carolina Development Company, which received millions of dollars through a U.S.D.A. small-business lending program.
LaRoque has previously denied any wrongdoing.
