MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Carter Capps, who remained undefeated in his collegiate career at Mount Olive, has been named Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week. Capps, who went 10-0 as a freshman, improved to 2-0 this season with a complete game shutout Saturday.
Capps, a sophomore right-hander from Kinston, N.C., tossed a two-hitter and struck out 12 batters in just seven innings in the nationally ninth-ranked Trojans’ 18-0 victory over Alderson-Broaddus. Capps overcame a first inning threat by striking out the final two batters, then went on to retire the side in order in five of the next six innings. He allowed only one ball hit out of the infield after the first inning and struck out the side in the seventh.
Baseball America named Capps its 2011 Preseason Division II Baseball National Pitcher of the Year.
Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Wingate in a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is 3 p.m.
