UPDATE: Kinston Officials Reject Highway 70 Median Proposal

Kinston officials have rejected the DOT's proposal for a new median on a busy stretch of Highway 70.

Lenoir County Commissioners and the Kinston City Council have signed resolutions against the project, according to the Kinston Free Press.

The DOT wants to build a median in Kinston at the intersection of Highway 70 and Highway 258, an area that has seen dozens of accidents over the years.

The project has also faced opposition from local business owners.

Previous Story:

The Kinston City Council will meet Monday to discuss the controversial Highway 70 median project.

The proposal's current design shows the first section of the median starting at the intersection of 58 South and Highway 70 near the McDonald's. It would end by the Hampton Inn on Highway 70 near 258.

The proposal comes after a 2008 traffic study showed there were 39 crashes within five years along the one mile stretch of highway.

The proposal has faced opposition from local business owners who say the median would make their business less accessible to customers.

With the state budget being balanced by laying off teachers and down sizing other state agencies, it really makes alot of sense to spend money on pouring concrete on a roadway just because DOT thinks it is the thing to do, in spite of what most citizens want. Bridge repairs are a lot more critical and should have priority over this median. If drives would concentrate on driving their vehicle instead of doing the numerous other activities they also conduct -- eating, looking at maps, applying makeup, etc.., the roads throughout the state would be a lot safer. The turn lane separates the traffic flow, but most people get within thirty feet of where they want to turn before giving any indication of their intentions to slow down and make a lane change and then wonder why the vehicle behind them just slammed on their brakes. For the volume of beach traffic that goes up and down that stretch of road, it is not unsafe. Driver inattention and distractions are the primary causes of most collisions and a concrete median is not going to stop people from having wrecks. Skinners bypass and the hwy 70 & 258 intersections are just as, or more, dangerous places to navigate. Wake up and pay full attention to driving your vehicle and you, your family and I will all be a lot safer.

One of my best friends lost her life in 2004 in front of the Trade Mart. I wish the median were there then. And her kids would still have their mother and she'd still be laughing and smiling. . . . . .

Your friends death wasn't in vain, it made me see the problem. I made the median suggestion after working her crash, and I was the one who put the cones that stayed so long out there, after the bad one the following year. It took DOT almost two years to just build what is there now. NCDOT has the only answer with the problem they have, short of building the big by-pass around Kinston, only some who hold the power don't like to hear the truth....

Ummm... are people really too lazy to go a little bit down the road and make a u-turn? Really people, get a life! I much prefer having a median than having to play cat and mouse with 60 mph traffic!!

Haha, Jerry great comment on the Median coverage about the media on highway 17. I think you really managed to get your point across in that comment. Glad we have concerned citizens like you who stay updated on how bad people drive in other communities.

ok dot and county and city leaders, here is the deal about this hwy 70 media. you say there have been x amount of wrecks and a media will help solve that problem. let me tate that MANY business's and residents and leaders disagree about the need for a media. I mean it seems like no mater what the john q public or the fine leaders the dot is going to shove it down our throats no matter what. if you say there have been x amounts of accidents there a media is going to make matters worse because you have people driving cars not robots driving cars. morehead city has the same setup we have here and they are not fighting to get a media and they drive terrible there. enough said
