Kinston To Vote On Mayoral Veto

Several towns and cities will vote to elect leadership in their communities Nov. 8. Kinston, however, will vote on an issue of how to lead their city.

A referendum is scheduled to be on the ballot in Kinston on election day. The group Citizens For Progress is supporting a measure to give the mayor of Kinston veto power over the city council.

The mayor currently only votes in the case of a tie, and the group says the office should "have the tools necessary to provide checks and balances on the actions taken by the council."

The city council could vote to override the mayor's veto if four of the five council members vote to do so.

Kinston has a chance to vote for progress and a bright future. A vote for the veto is a vote against underhanded dirty politics. The Kinston City Council would never have had the veto referendum if they had not voted to take away what little power the mayor had. In retaliation for the mayor voicing his opposition to Taxation Without Representation in the form of Force Annexation, the Kinston City Council voted to take the Mayor off the Highway 70 corridor commission and take away his right to sign official documents. The only thing left for the mayor is the ability to break a tie. This never happens because the City Council is all from the same political slant. We need new blood in the Kinston City Council. Also, give the Mayor the veto. Right now he can only vote to break a tie. If you are worried that he will have too much power, that is simply not true. The amendment to the Kinston City Charter states that the Mayor can still be overridden by a 4/5 majority. This mayor is the first to actually address the critical issues that face our dear city: shrinking population and tax base, unbalanced budgets, robbing the utilities funds to balance the budget. This mayor has stood up against all of these hurtful things. We need to give BJ a chance to actually make a difference! Give him the veto! GO VOTE!

Heads up: Greenville has it's own problems with crime. But they are getting the thugs (arresting many) off the streets and doing a awesome job. Mr. Kinston Mayor, when you get settled in, invite GPD over and our Finest will sure make a big difference in getting (cleaning up the crime for the City of Kinston.) We in Greenville have the best force on in the East. POPPA
