K-Tribe Swept, Loses Pitching Duel 2-1

Kinston's Drew Pomeranz had another fantastic start, but it wasn't enough as Wilmington beat Kinston 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the win Wilmington swept Kinston in the three game series.

Pomeranz got a big bop from his offense early. Adam Abraham blasted the first pitch he saw over the left field wall in the bottom of the second inning for Kinston. Abraham now has a home run in each of his last three games. Abraham leads the Carolina League in both home runs (3) and RBI (6).

Pomeranz took a perfect game into the fourth inning for his second straight start, walking Whit Merrifield to lead off the fourth. Pomeranz struck out five through his first three innings of work. Pomeranz had not given up a hit in his first 5 2/3 innings of work. With Adam Frost on first and two-outs in the sixth, things fell apart. Kinston catcher Roberto Perez overthrew second base on Frost's steal attempt, allowing Frost to take third base. Pomeranz then gave up his first hit of the game, as Whit Merrifield drove Frost home with a single to center, tying the game at one. Pomeranz got the no decision, giving up one hit and an unearned run in 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out eight.

Wilmington would take the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning. With Kinston reliever Bret Brach on the mound, Rey Navarro led off with a triple. Navarro scored later in the inning on an RBI ground-out from John Whittleman. The Blue Rocks managed just three hits on the day. Brach (0-1) took the loss, giving up two hits and one run in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out one and did not allow a walk. Tim Melville (1-1) got the win for Wilmington, giving up five hits and one run in six innings. Kelvin Herrera and Kevin Chapman combined for three innings of one hit ball from the pen. Kinston had six hits on the afternoon, Justin Toole went 2-for-3.

With the first homestand of the season in the books, the K-Tribe (1-5) hits the road for the first time this season on Friday. After a scheduled off day on Thursday, the K-Tribe takes on Winston-Salem in the Triad on Friday night at 7pm. T.J. McFarland will take the hill for Kinston. The Indians return home for an eight game homestand April 21st through the 28th.
