By next summer there will be a trail that runs from Camp Lejeune to Jacksonville called "Rails to Trails," but some people are upset about the new spot for hiking and biking.
The projected path will go within the Lejeune Memorial Gardens, with part of it going between the Beirut and 9-11 Memorials.
Some veterans we spoke with tell us the Memorial Gardens are sacred.
Vietnam Veteran Lee Walker says it's a place to reflect, remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and says the path is disrespectful. He says, "It's a distraction. It shouldn't be here anymore than if we took a bike path and put it in a cemetery."
Michael Ellzey is also a Veteran and he wants as many people as possible to visit the Memorial Gardens, be it by bike, car, motorcycle or on foot. He is confident visitors will be respectful. He says, "You'll have one or two people, maybe a family come in by bicycle along the trail and hopefully they'll stop, walk through the memorial and feel the importance of what they represent."
The "Rails to Trails" extends along abandoned rail beds from Camp Lejeune to Jacksonville.
According to the city, the base decided the path of the trail.
