From behind the wheel to a medical helicopter, troopers said they charged a man with drunk driving after he hit a tree Friday night.
Trooper J. Guzman with the Onslow County Highway Patrol said around 9 p.m. Friday, 43-year-old Robert Coon of Jacksonville was drinking and driving too fast on Smith Road.
According to investigators, Coon tried to make a turn near Riggs Road when he veered off the road, overcorrected, veered of the road again, hitting a ditch and a tree.
Coon was put on a medical helicopter and taken to a Wilmington hospital.
Trp. Guzman said Coon suffered a broken arm and a broken leg from the wreck, but he is expected to recover.
Coon is now facing a driving while impaired charge along with a reckless driving charge.
No one else was hurt in the wreck.
