An infant and her mother had to be rescued from a cruise ship after the child couldn't breathe.
Coast Guard Air Station out of Elizabeth City received a satellite phone call just before 9:00am Friday morning to cruise ship, Norwegian Gem, requesting a Medevac for a 16 month girl.
The ship was 245 miles south of Cape Lookout.
Doctors say the child was suffering from respiratory tract infection and respiratory distress.
Both the mother and child were hoisted from the ship onto a MH-60T helicopter.
Crew members say it was a difficult rescue due to high winds, coupled with heavy rain and snow.
We're told the infant was taken safely to New Hanover Regional Hospital in Wilmington.
