Hyde County To Consider Sales Tax Hike

Hyde County Commissioners are hosting a public hearing this week about a proposed sales tax increase that officials say the citizens are asking for.

The proposal is to increase the sales tax by .25-cent, a quarter of a penny. The measure could be voted on during the May primary.

The public hearing on the proposal is at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Government Center in Swan Quarter and at Ocracoke School through the
electronic meeting system.

Several counties have increased their local sales tax rate. The beneficiary is often the public school system.

You Overtaxed Ocracokers keep voting for those BOC that run over to the island-throw you a little bone now and again, brown-nose you for your vote. Then forget you until the next time they need a tax hike or the next election what ever comes first. They will promise you a rose garden. But they already got you in the poor house, now the homeless shelter if they can get money from Obama stimulus pkg. to fix one that is!

I guess since we pay most of the taxes we ought to have more commissioners from the island than just one. What do you think?

When Irene stuck the Scranton area with a record disaster, people from other areas of the country come to there rescue. Hyde co. is helping them by bestrowing higher taxes for them to pay!

How much would it cost to enlarge the old courthouse for hyde 1st homeless shelter? Because Hyde is going to need one. Can't the mgr. planner,& the BOC produce something more productive for citizens than a homeless shelter?

Haven't heard any one in favor of the tax increase.Just the comm. wanting more money to put their buddies and family in jobs or higher pay increases. Everyone needs to go to work for the co.in order to pay what those dumbacrats wants in taxes. Everyone tightens their budget, but Hyde started spending. Vote them out!

I vote we turn the new courthouse into a homeless shelter....because that is what we will all be eventually....maybe except for the rich guy on here that wants to pay more. We have all had to tighten our belts, so why not the county too....remember the county employees are public SERVANTS. And shame on the state lottery. From what I see, the residents here are buying a fortune in lottery tickets. I cant understand why the school is in more of a need now than before the lottery?

A sales tax...come on Commissioners, please. Yesterday ended curbside trash pickup and we get to pay at least as much to take it to the 'convenience center. You're charging year round residents and weekly rental properties the same amounts to handle the trash. The rental houses are businesses. They are NOT residential housing. And they produce most of the trash. Charge the businesses for what they produce. I am sick and tired of paying the costs for almost everyone else. Give us a break. Live within your means-like we have to do.
