Fallen Deputy Sheriff Laid To Rest

A horse drawn caisson brought the body of a fallen deputy sheriff to Southern Nash Senior High School while law enforcement officers lined the entire length of the high school.

Deputy Warren "Sneak" Lewis, who was assigned to the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force, was gunned down Thursday night in Kinston. The veteran lawman and father of two was attempting to serve murder warrants on three suspects. Five people have been charged with the deputy's murder.

This afternoon lawmen from across the state stood in front of Southern Nash Senior High School as Lewis' casket arrived. Family members wiped away tears as Lewis' flag-draped casket was carried inside.

A Nash County detention officer described Lewis as kind, respectful and a family-man, and said his loss will be deeply felt in the community.

Lewis was later laid to rest at Hollywood Cemetery in Middlesex, where he was given a 21-gun-salute. The funeral director says four doves were also released at the grave site--three representing the Holy Trinity, and one for Lewis.

Governor Beverly Perdue asked that all flags in Lenoir and Nash counties be flown at half staff in honor of Deputy Lewis.
