NEW INFO: Human Waste Spill Causes Crash

It was a smelly mess on one Eastern Carolina highway, that's caused at least two accidents.

New Bern police closed down one of the eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 after a truck spilled human waste on the busy highway. The driver, Benjamin Squires of Grantsboro, has been charged with failure to secure his load.

Police say the processed waste came from a sewage plant and was supposed to be used for fertilizer. Instead the dump truck's tailgate opened, spilling the waste. There's about 300 feet of mess on the highway that has to be cleaned up.

Police say two vehicles skidded in the mess. One hit a guard rail, while the other struck the median cable. The two drivers were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

U.S. 70 was down to one lane near the MLK exit as city crews cleaned up the debris. The truck driver will be charged for the cleanup.

All lanes of the highway reopened around 12:30 p.m.

It would be a play on words if it weren't an actual charge... which it is. Oh well.
