Highway 99 Bridge Reopens In Beaufort County

A highway that's been closed for nearly six months is open again with a new bridge.

Highway 99 south of Belhaven has been closed since June because of construction of a new bridge over the Pungo Creek. That closure created an 11 mile detour for residents of the area.

The bridge opened Thursday night to traffic.

Earlier this month a construction worker was killed at the site when he was run over by a dump truck that was backing up.

The bridge is fantastic!!! Fresh asphalt, wide lanes, and bike lanes are great! It is also nice to cut ten minutes off my commute to work.

All that matters is that it is done, open, and beautiful! The company that built this bridge did an awesome job, and have been the nicest and most hard working crew I've known... great job!!

Glad to hear it is open. Looks like a good size bridge. Makes you wonder why the tiny bridges, Clarks Neck Rd., Hwy 32, Washington Park took over a year and this one only several months.
