At a Department of Transportation workshop in Kinston Tuesday night, residents got a look at the latest options for a Highway 70 bypass. Project officials say earlier this year public opinion was split pretty evenly between redoing the existing route from Dover to La Grange in Lenoir County, taking a northern route around Kinston, or going around on the south side. Any decision will potentially impact traffic, businesses and homes.
"I'll be dead and gone by the time it happens, but even if I weren't I feel positive about it because I really think there needs to be publicity that there's a very positive side to this. That it's not loss we should be thinking about, but what we're going to be gaining," said Lenoir County Resident Carmena Zimmerman.
Engineers plan to come back with a narrowed selection of options by March next year. The decision on which route to take is expected in 2014. Actual construction of the project is not likely for at least another decade. Another workshop is scheduled for Thursday 4-7p.m. at the Public Services Complex on U.S. 258 South in Kinston. Residents can stop by anytime during the workshop.
