Travel troubles persist for those using Highway 264 between Hyde county and Dare county because of the Pains Bay wildfire which started more than 2 weeks ago.
That fire started Thursday May 5th and a ten mile stretch of the highway between Stumpy Point and Engelhard has been closed since then. There's no word on when it may reopen. The fire remains at nearly 26,000 acres and is still 80% contained. Foresters say warmer, dryer weather continues to hamper their efforts. A code orange unhealthy air alert is in affect for the northeastern part of the state for this weekend. That includes Craven and Beaufort counties
