Highway 17 Project In Beaufort County Finally Opens

Drivers in Beaufort County no longer have to dodge orange barrels and construction equipment. The much-delayed Highway 17 project is now finished.

Barrels were removed Monday afternoon along the 4-mile section of the highway south of Chocowinity. The project, which expands the heavily traveled highway from two to four lanes, was originally scheduled to be finished last September.

But five different completion dates were missed and the D.O.T. ended up fining the contractor $1,500 a day because the project was so far behind schedule.

The project ties into the Washington bypass, while another 5 miles of Highway 17 north is currently being expanded to four lanes as well. That project is being done by a different contractor.

Those poor unemployed orange barrels--what will they do now? Where will they go? They have been feeding at the DOT trough for years but now they are out of a position. I recommend Beaufort Co citizens organize an "Adopt a Barrel" program immediately--there are now hundreds of barrels in need of a place to live. Let's face it neighbors, we have seen them daily for months. They're like a part of our family. We really must offer them assistance in their moment of need.

They, like most of our road funds, have gone to Charlotte. Thank the newly elected Congress for moving the barrels and your share of funding. If you dont miss him yet, you will.

Who waved the magic wand? This project is one for the records. Most lengthy.
