DEPUTIES: High School Student's Death Accident

Carteret County deputies have ruled the shooting death of a high school student an accident.

Anthony Simmons was found shot September 16th at his Bell Farm Road home.

At the time family members told WITN they believed the 15-year-old student at Croatan High School accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun.

Extra counselors are at a Carteret County high school after lawmen say a 15-year-old student died Friday night in a shooting.

Deputies say Anthony Simmons of Bell Farm Road in Newport died at his home from a single gunshot wound. Authorities do not suspect foul play, but the death investigation is continuing.

Family members say they believe the teen accidentally shot himself while cleaning the weapon.

Simmons was a student at Croatan High School. His funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Broad Creek United Methodist Church.

    My heart goes out to this family. Pray and stay strong. 8 years ago this past May, my 14 y/o son did the same thing. I will be praying for you..
