A former high school coach must now register as a sex offender after being convicted of two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery.
Derek Phelps was an assistant track and cross country coach at D.H. Conley High School in Greenville. He is now serving a 60-day sentence in the Pitt County Detention Center.
Phelps was arrested in April for communicating with a 13-year-old boy via text messages.
An assistant track and cross country coach at a Pitt County high school who has been indicted on multiple sex charges was due in court Thursday.
But court officials say the case against Derek Phelps, 23, was continued. Phelps faces two counts of indecent liberties with a minor and five counts of soliciting a minor by computer.
The coach at DH Conley High School was arrested in March. His attorney said in an earlier court appearance that Phelps had communicated with the 13-year-old boy in the investigation via text messages.
His new court date in September 8th.

Derek Phelps appeared before District Judge Charles Vincent at the Pitt County Detention Center.
WITN's Brittany Gunter was at the appearance and reports Judge Vincent changed Phelps' bond to $14,000 secured bond and $86,000 unsecured bond. That required Phelps to post $14,000 bond to be released from the detention center. The $86,000 figure would not come into play unless Phelps failed to show up for his next court appearance.
Phelps had to be released to his parents and cannot be around any minors who attend Pitt County Schools.
Phelps' attorney revealed the communication with the 13-year-old in the investigation took place via text messages.
He was charged with five counts of soliciting a child by a computer to commit an unlawful act and two counts of indecent liberties with a child.
Phelps' parents were also present at the hearing.
The Pitt County School system suspended Phelps with pay when the Pitt County Sheriff's Office started the investigation earlier this week.
His next court date is May 19th.
