A building ridge of high pressure will send heat surging into eastern North Carolina on Wednesday. Highs will reach the middle 90s inland and upper 80s along most of the beaches. Only a stray thunderstorm or two can be expected. Most communities across eastern North Carolina are in desperate need of rainfall but widespread shower activity is unlikely for the remainder of the week. The drought will continue for area crops, gardens and lawns. Even hotter conditions are likely by the end of the week.
