The cost of health care coverage is going up for college students who get their health insurance through any of the 16 University of North Carolina schools, including ECU.
The price is going from $847 dollars last year, to $1,418 this year. Before that the price was $695. That means within the past couple of years the price has more than doubled.
It was back in 2010 that the UNC system started requiring every student at its schools to get health insurance if they weren't covered elsewhere.
School officials say prices have gone up because so many people are using the plan and so the loss ratio for the insurance provider, Chartis, has been very high.
Students like Shalisa Richardson, aren't happy about the increase. "It's a really really big jump. It's not just a little, It's almost double so it's definitely going to create some hardships for people."
The UNC system plans to re-bid the insurance contract next year.
