ECU Police: Groups Assault, Rob Victims On Campus After Halloween Downtown

ECU police are investigating a pair of crimes that involved groups of criminals early Friday after the Halloween celebration in downtown Greenville.

According to an ECU alert, a man was assaulted by a group of men badly enough to be taken to Vidant Medical Center. The crime happened at 2 a.m. at 14th St. and Berkley Blvd. Police say there were between four and seven attackers who ran off towards College Hill Dr. No suspects have been identified.

Another group that included both men and women robbed two people of their cell phones. Police say this happened near the Jenkins Fine Arts Building on 5th St. between 2:30 a.m. and 2:50 a.m. The group split up, with four men and one woman leaving in a blue Toyota Camry, heading east on Fifth St. The others ran towards central campus.

In terms of the downtown Halloween event itself, Greenville Police Sgt. Joe Friday told WITN's Heather King there were no major problems overnight.

"ALL CLEAR. Another Greenville Halloween in the books." Those are the words Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas posted on his Facebook page at 3 a.m. Friday.

Police set up barricades to protect and contain people coming into the downtown area. They also ran DWI checkpoints overnight, and a handful of people were arrested on that charge.

Greenville Police Sgt. Joe Friday told WITN's Heather King there were no major problems overnight.

When we were there we saw people in all kinds of costumes from skeletons, to bananas, to Big Bird.

Roads are blocked off in the downtown area, and people have to pass through a checkpoint.

There is also a big police presence working to keep things safe.
