Greenville Road Construction Causes Delays

Construction began Tuesday on one busy road in the east--causing some lengthy traffic delays.

It's taking place around the intersection of Memorial Drive and West 5th street in Greenville.

Department of Transportation workers are extending a traffic island in the north bound and south bound lanes of Memorial Drive to allow more vehicles into the turning lane when completed.

Some traffic was backed up nearly to the Pitt Greenville Airport at one point.

Officials hope to have work done in the next 2 to 3 days.

It should would be great if they would think ahead and follow their own complete street policy put in the required sidewalks and bike lanes now instead of just doing this job all over again later.

HINT: If you're coming southbound into Greenville, avoid the mess and take the left hand turn on NC 33 east towards Grimesland. It becomes Greene Street after 33 jogs left. Stay straigth on Greene St. Follow that into downtown Greenville (over the Tar River bridge) and turn right on Dickinson St back out to Memorial Drive. Its a little out of the way, but if traffic was backed up to the airport, it may be a quicker route in the long run!

They need to do this at a lot more intersections in Greenville. Arlington and Evans, Firetower and Evans (on Firetower, they actually did a pretty good job on Evans Street, except for adding in 2 more lanes. Traffic backs up to Best Buy during rush hour.) In fact, pretty much wherever they put a center divider at an intersection. They are all much too short, and cause the left turners to back up into the main travel lanes, which makes traffic at the light even worse.
