Greenville Mom Accused Of Trying To Drown Son In Bathtub

A mother is accused of trying to drown her six-year-old son in the bathtub.

Greenville police report officers were called to a home on Paige Drive Friday afternoon to a call of child abuse.

According to Greenville police, 25-year-old Shaquia Powell reportedly tried to forcibly hold the child under water. They report she later contacted a neighbor and told him about the attempt. Authorities say the neighbor then contacted Greenville Police and also contacted members of Powell’s extended family.

Powell was charged with attempted murder.

Police report Powell’s family members were on the scene and assisted police officers with the investigation.

They also say Powell was transported by EMS to Vidant Medical Center for evaluation and was later released then transported to the Greenville Police Department.

Police found that the child did not appear to be physically injured.

Officials say detectives from the GPD Special Victims Unit responded to the hospital and followed up on the investigation.

They report they consulted with officials from the Pitt County District Attorney’s office, and it was determined that Powell would be charged with First Degree Attempted Murder.

Powell was arrested and taken to Pitt County Detention Center where she is being held without bond pending a first appearance in court.

Police say the case remains under investigation and other charges may be brought against Powell.

Ms.Powell, kids, and family are always in my heart and prayers. I've known her for a very long time. No excuses can or should be made for her actions;as we know them to have occurred. I will say this young lady came into this world "challenged mentally" yet as a female God did not choose to make her sterile and neither did her parents/family. Should they have? We are beyond that point. So many of us have done things in the dark that have yet to be manifested in the light. I say to you keep living!

I PERSONALLY KNOW THIS LADY AND I HONESTLY DONT BELIEVE SHE HAS THE ABILITY TO HARM HER CHILDREN..SHE LOVED HER CHILDREN UNCONDITIONALLY. SHE AND I WERE PREGNANT AT THE SAME TIME AND SHE DOTED ON BEING A MOTHER. I DO HOWEVER BELIEVE THAT IN A MOMENT OF A "MOM"ENTARY FIT SHE MAY HAVE REACTED CRIMINALY BY PUSHING HER CHILD WHILE IN THE TUB. AS A MOTHER WHO HASN'T HAD A "MOM"ENTARY ACT WITH THEIR CHILD WHEN THEY DIDNT MEAN ANY HARM AND LOST CONTROL OF THEIR ACTION BE IT SCREAMING A SMACK OF CURSING AT THE CHILD. WE ALL HAVE AND MAYBE IT WASNT WHAT THEY ARE MAKING IT OUT TO BE. HE W/O SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE!

I FEEL WHAT U R SAYING ABOUT HAVING A "MOM"ENTARY MOMENT BUT BEFORE IT GETS THAT FAR U SHOULD BE ADULT ENOUGH(SINCE U HVE KIDS) TO STEP AWAY AND DEFUSE THE SITUATION. i MYSELF HAVE FELT LIKE I COULD SMACK MINE BUT U DONT POINT BLANK PERIOD THEY R JUST SOME THINGS THT CAN'T BE JUSTIFIED JUST BECAUSE U R A SINGLE MOM AND STRESSED

I feel that no one has the right to judge especially when we dont know the whole story. So i am going to continue to pray for her as well as the child. Because in a time like this we need to unite and not point fingers. With that being said everyone that know how to come together and pray collectively lets do so and dont forget Sean White as well.

You people kill me. Judging a person you know nothing about. None of us know what happened in that moment of time for this woman. Hopefully it is not as it appears.

Crazy, Crazy , crazy. She will never do time. The only smart one in this was the neighbor, for calling the cops. That kid will be back with her before you know it. Poor little guy.

Amazing you give child molesters a bond but she gets no bond and mind you she went to a neighbor so that to me shows remorse and a cry for help. she could have completed the act but she didn't she could have said nothing but she didn't she went to somebody who knew her family and they made the call. no bond is a terrible thing for somebody reaching out for help regardless of how she reached out

Just wanted to send prayers out to this little boy that he will heal from the wounds of knowing his own mother tried to take his life. Obviously she needs mental help, so we will keep her in prayers for healing as well.
