Greenville City Workers Battle For Chili Honors

It was a chili grudge match in Greenville Wednesday all in the name of charity.

The Greenville Fire Department garage played host to the "battle royale" with all proceeds going to the United Way.

Eleven combatants presented their take on the popular dish with judges casting their vote for their favorite.

The participants were made up of members of the city of Greenville, the police department, and the fire department.

In the end Billy Merrill took the top prize with his backdraft chili. Second place went to Jason Palmatier with his gut thumper chili, and 3rd went to Rahul Thapar with his offering.

Marek, with all due respect, could you please provide documentation to prove the "employees" took sick time? This is my money and i demand an accounting of how much money this cost me.

George, the City has been having this Chili cook-off for years now and the City employees you saw there were either on their lunch breaks or took sick leave in order to volunteer for the Chili cook off. Lastly, it was a fundraiser for a non-profit for I don't think many taxpayers should be getting their drawers in a bunch over this...

Would have been nice if the general public was invited or had been aware of this cook-off that was for charity. But maybe it was only for city workers.

I drove by the firehouse and saw this going on. Quite a few people there. I assume that they were mostly city employees. While it's for a good cause....it's also during working hours. Meaning the taxpayers are paying people to have a chili contest. This just doesn't seem right to me. What is Pat Dunn thinking?
