Greenville Police Cracking Down On Internet Sweepstakes Businesses

Greenville police say they will now shut down internet sweepstakes locations, more than a year and a half after a State Supreme Court ruling.

At an afternoon news conference, Chief Hassan Aden said letters to the owners of the businesses have gone out, warning them they have until October 1st to close or face arrest.

There are approximately ten sweepstakes locations in the city.

Since the December 2012 ruling, sweepstakes businesses in the city limits continued to operate with "pre-reveal" software.

Aden said the District Attorney's Office will work with them on enforcing the law. The chief said for first offenders it would be a misdemeanor offense, while subsequent arrests would be felonies.
