Greene County lawmen arrested an employee from the county's school system for allegedly stealing money from the cash-strapped county.
Angela Potter, 43, of Kinston, faces a felony charge of embezzlement. According to the Kinston Free Press, the woman embezzled nearly $2,700 in checks and cash from Greene County Schools.
Before the theft, Potter worked as a benefits specialist for the school system. The incident allegedly took place May 27, and Potter was suspended without pay from June 1-30.
Court records show Potter's next court appearance is scheduled for Friday Sept. 23.
Greene County was one of the areas hardest hit by the deadly April 16 tornadoes. Some of the county's schools were severely damaged and face millions of dollars in cleanup costs.
