Great White Shark Spotted Off NC Coast

It was quite a sight for fishermen off our coast last weekend when an 18-foot Great White Shark circled their boat for about 20 minutes and even bumped it.

Matt Garrett, who is visiting from Boston, and some of his friends were 25 miles southeast of Wrightsville Beach when they saw the fins.

Garrett then pulled out his cellphone and started shooting video that he shared with our NBC affiliate in Wilmington, WECT.

Paul Barrington at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher took a look at the video and confirmed it is a Great White. He says it's rare to see them off our coast - but sightings do happen. However, they're hardly ever caught on tape.

Garrett says "He was going straight for us - like t bone - he nudged us with his nose and turned around and slapped the boat with his tail."

The shark eventually took off leaving Garrett and his friends with quite a fishing story to tell.

The shark was probably wondering why there was appetizers (fishermen) with toothpicks (fishing poles) floating around.

I'm glad they didn't feel a need to catch it, kill it, or otherwise do anything except respect it. The big sharks have become a rare sight thanks to over-fishing. Thanks for sharing the video.

Back in 1975, Spielberg did a movie about 3 guys that try to cantch one of those sharks. I don't think they had the camera crew or equipment for it. It would have come out looking like The Blair Witch Project (and who wants that?) and they might have had to pay Peter Benchley for the rights.

Sounds to my humble brain that sincee they got actual footage of this thing it entitles them to tell all kinds of "whale stories".

Ever since the game show 'Card Sharks' was canceled, the sharks don't have a place to 'get they game on'. (poor ol' sharks)

I would have killed the thing. Sharks are just like snakes. The only good one is a dead one

WOW, Bruce the Shark. The same could be said about certain moronic people. Just because you choose to be in their environment, does not give you the authority to vacate them. How naive and self centered can people get!

Snakes eat lots of mice & rats. Are you saying you'd prefer to be over-run with rodents than to share the planet with snakes? BTW how many deaths per year are caused by snakes? How often do you hear about snakes attacking people? And what about spiders, do you hate them too? I think dogs attack more people than sharks, snakes & spiders combined. So do we need to eradicate them, too? Mosquitoes & Fleas attack humans without provocation. Yet you rarely hear about people killing them.

Well, not necessarily. Just because snakes are gone that would not mean that the planet would be over-run with rodents; consider the natural, density-independent and density-dependent, checks on populations of species . . . so no, avoid making slippery slope fallacies and grab a biology textbook. Secondly, "I think" is not very valid in the world. Provide statistics and maybe, just maybe, you will sound legitimate. Do yourself a favor and take a biology (and perhaps a statistics class) class before posting anything. And I like dogs, I don't know about you.

slippery slope fallacies are not the words to desribe these uneducated people who do not look to have taken any ap classes in there life making statements that are completely irrational.

Well you are most certainly the most considerate person! What have the sharks or snakes ever done to you, Bruce? They maintain biodiversity and ecosystems in their respective niche; without a certain species there is not telling as to what ramifications this would have on the biosphere and that specific ecosystem. Pay attention in biology class in school, Bruce. We are stewards of Earth, not the owners.

Bruce knows everything. He's the type that would wipe out a species just for glory (because he can) and denies any long term effects on the food chain or eventual detrement to the planet. He would be the type that would have never regulated CFCs, saying that the ozone layer won't be depleated. If Bruce lived in the old west, (and was a govener) there would be no more buffalo.
