Governor Perdue Speaks Out On Conference Realignment

Governor Beverly Perdue discussed football with ECU Chancellor Steve Ballard and Athletics Director Terry Holland on Tuesday. Perdue was a guest speaker at the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Brook Valley Country Club and voiced her opinion on conference realignment.

"The thing I think a governor can do and do very effectively is let the other governors and other decision makers and these other schools that might have a vote understand what a fabulous school (East Carolina University) is," said Perdue.

East Carolina, currently a member of Conference USA, has publicly stated the university is in favor of being a member of a conference with an automatic qualifier for football's coveted Bowl Championship Series. Conference USA's annual football champion currently does not qualify for a BCS Bowl.

The college football landscape could change drastically in the near future. On Sunday the Atlantic Coast Conference announced it would expand to a 14-team league with the additions of current Big East members Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

As an ECU grad I have watched ECU throw away over 90 million dollars on this pipe dream of being in a bcs conference now the whole sports landscape has changed the big east is dead all those schools are jumping off a sinking ship while ECU is trying to jump on. BE REALISTIC FOLKS JUST STAY WHERE YOU ARE! If the bigeast takes you whats the difference? the big east will not be a bcs conference anymore and like an earlier writer said they probably won't have a legit chamionship game like c-usa does. wake up folks! eastern north carolina is not a big tv market, you can't use Raleigh because to many schools claim the triangle already. The powers that be AD and others chose not to try to play up ECUs links to Va. Beach, Norfolk area years ago why? I don't know , the same reason they didn't know the bleachers in the stadium where messed up until it was to late last year! Looks like to me PIRATE NATION HAS BEEN PROMISED ALOT BY AN AD THAT CAN'T DELIVER! bottomline because of people sitting on their laurels ECU could have joined the big east a few years ago built a rep. and be eligible to move on now but alas they are joining or trying to join a big east that is dead! what a waste of time, effort and MONEY! ECU will be left out of the bcs conferences either way you look at! the pirates will need a new winter coat because they will be left out in the cold probably for the final time! big time college football has moved to superconferences

ECU needs to be very careful here! Rumors have all the members of the big east joining other conferences, everybody but USF and Cincy is expected to leave! It seems like to me that if they add the entire east division of c-usa it still will not save there bcs status! bottomline at least in c-usa they have a legit conference championship game, if they join a conference where EVERYONE is leaving that may not be the case

East Carolina would bring the total package to the Big East, considering that East Carolina is the total package. Great facilities, great viewing audience when the football team is playing, great football program who has consistently beat Big East teams in the past, great fan base with several sellouts, new state and new territory for the Big East to enter along the east coast to get more people on the televised East Carolina games, and just overall a greater fan base than most of these current schools. It would take an idiot to not allow ECU into the Big East. If ECU does not get in the Big East, then the commissioner should step down before he receives further embarrassment for another dumb decision. East Carolina would be the smartest choice, considering they are the total package and bring in that swag to the Big East.

Adding East Carolina to any conference would be predicated on football (not to mention a top 25 baseball program as well). While the basketball program at ECU is deplorable, you could easily make the same argument about Duke as it relates to football. Additionally, it doesn't hurt to have a few cupcakes to play in basketball (whether we end up BE or ACC). Again, this is driven by foobtall, and you could easily argue that East Carolina has the best product in the entire state.

Preston, the basketball team however is on the rise with Lebo running the program. As long as East Carolina ends up in the Big East, the program will be off to a slow start, but as time progresses, then ECU will be in the upper half of the Big East with Lebo and next thing you know, an NCAA appearance will be there within 5 years.

ECU need some more state money. Coach McNeill looking worried about something the last few weeks. ECU may have to stop some 6 figure a year salaries. Maybe the numbers will change to 0-3....

Good points. Maybe realigning the conferences messes up her brackets. After all, this is more improtant than effective governing. Just ask the POTUS.

I'm a graduate of Ecu & Unc and I think the ACC should take a long hard look at East Carolina. They have a lot to offer academically and sports teams are on the way up. Football and baseball have been good and Coach Lebo will fix the basketball situation in time.

I Agree.Check the ticket sales for ECU VS ACC teams football past games. Huge gate receipts.Yet UNC ,NC State schedule Liberty,James Madison,ECT .;These teams will not sell near the tickets that ECU would have sold. Quite a lot of ACC teams are drivable games. Do the math. They are stupid by not letting ECU in.

Get real, what will ECU bring. It's all about tv money, and ECU is not a market.

Sounds like we have a N.C. State fan here! Anti-Perdue, most likely republican, and usually it's the N.C. State people who are the right wingers.

should require all sports participants to be able to read ,write, and do math at least 3rd. grade elementary school level before they graduate from college.also if they cannot recognize their own name spelled out in writting they should not be allowed to play sports. no X orXx,junior, should not qualify.

I am a huge Pirate fan and part of the Pirate nation. Unfortunately the inconsistency of our sports programs will keep us from landing in a decent conference. The big east is dead and there is no where else to go. Yes, our programs are on the up and up...just a day late and a dollar short......
