Governor Tours Damaged Counties

Governor Beverly perdue spent Sunday surveying damage across the state and will continue her tour of Eastern Carolina Monday.

She viewed damage to several counties Sunday by helicopter, and plans to be in Bertie, Halifax, and Wilson counties Monday. Perdue declared a state of emergency for the entire state. The governor said talking to people about the losses they suffered made her sad, almost to the point of tears.

"They were so grateful to be alive. I mean, just so simply grateful to be alive. And look around them, and everything they had was gone. I mean, you can't over exaggerate that. Everything was gone," said Gov. Bev Perdue, (D) North Carolina.

Perdue says she spoke with President Obama and he pledged to do whatever it takes to rebuild North Carolina as fast and as efficiently as possible.

From the Governor's office:

Gov. Bev Perdue this evening declared a state of emergency for North Carolina following storms that generated tornadoes across the state.

The declaration puts the state’s emergency management plan into action and provides access to resources needed to aid communities affected by the storms.

In a separate order, Gov. Perdue temporarily suspended the restrictions on work hours for utility workers in order to allow the work necessary to repair power lines. The same order temporarily waives the restriction on driving hours for truck drivers to allow for the transportation of supplies to affected communities and for the removal of debris.
