George White Historical Mile Marker Unveiled

A former Congressman and black leader in the 1800’s was honored Saturday in Tarboro.

More than one hundred people gathered to watch as the new mile marker named after George White was unveiled.

White was elected to the U.S. House in 1896 and 1898, making him at the time the only black member in Congress. He declined to run for a third term after a state law was passed that disenfranchised black voters. A black lawmaker wasn't elected to Congress from the South again until after Jim Crow in 1972.

The highway marker was placed at Main and Granville Streets.
