UPDATE: A Williamston Street Reopens After Gas Leak

A ruptured gas line prompted the closure of a portion of highway and the evacuation of local businesses.

Martin County Emergency Management closed the section of East Boulevard after work crews struck a natural gas line around 1:40 P.M. Monday.

As of 5 P.M. Monday, the leak has been fixed and the roadway reopened to traffic.

A major street in Williamston has been shut down due to a natural gas leak.

Martin County Emergency Management says approximately ten businesses have been evacuated after a Department of Transportation crew ruptured an underground line on East Boulevard.

It happened around 1:40 p.m. across from Dominion Power as the DOT was putting in a new sign. That section of East Boulevard has been shut down and Piedmont Natural Gas is on scene trying to close off the leak.

By 4:30 p.m. the leak had been patched, though the highway remains closed.
