Funerals Held For Several Bertie County Tornado Victims

Saturday several funeral services were held for some Bertie County tornado victims.

Friends and family members gathered at Colerain Baptist Church in Bertie County to say goodbye to three of their loved ones.

Helen White, Roy Lafferty Jr., and his wife Barbara Lafferty were all killed after a tornado destroyed their home April 16th.

According to family members the twister ripped the home from its foundation and a stair case now remains where the home used to be.

Friends describe the three as caring and friendly people. They say the three will be missed.

Funerals were also held Saturday for Milton Sutton Jr. and Lewis Chamblee.

Previous Story:

Friends and family members gathered Friday afternoon to remember one of the 12 victims killed in a tornado this past weekend in Bertie county.

The funeral for 96 year old Celia Perry White was at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Colerain. White was killed last weekend when she was inside the home of 56 year old Robert Perry in Colerain. It was destroyed by a tornado. Robert Perry was also killed.

According to family members, White was the last of 12 siblings to pass away. Many people gathered inside the church for the funeral and talked about all the good times they had with white and what a special woman she was.

"She was a sweet person. Anything she had- if she could help you in any way she would. She always had an encouraging word for people." said the victim's niece Myrtisphene Askew
