Cleanup Continues After Fuel Leak At New River Air Station

The cleanup continues at the New River Air Station after their second large fuel leak since last summer.

The leak in a line connected to a temporary fuel pump was found around 6:15 a.m. Thursday during routine maintenance checks.

An estimated 2,300 gallons of fuel leaked, according to air station officials.

The Marine Corps says base environmental management officials placed oil-absorbing booms in a nearby ditch to keep the fuel from spreading while vacuum trucks collected free-standing fuel.

So far some 1,800 gallons of the lost fuel has been recovered.

The malfunction that caused the leak is under investigation and New River says the leak will no effect on local drinking water.

Last August, some 8,000 to 10,000 gallons of jet fuel leaked at the Air Station from a broken pipeline.
