Former Teacher Facing Child Porn Charges Back In Jail

A former middle school and substitute teacher in Carteret County faces charges related to child pornography was placed back in jail after his first court appearance this morning.

Walter Pettit, age 52 of Park Villa Apartments off Old Murdoch Road in Morehead City, was locked up on a $500,000 bail. He made bail Thursday night and was released.

Friday morning, he was in court awaiting his first appearance. The District Attorney's Office asked Judge Cheryl Spencer to increase his bond to $1,000,000. The judge split the difference and Pettit's bond was increased to $750,000.

Deputies placed Pettit back in jail under the new bond. If released, the judge told Pettit that he could not be around anyone under the age of 18 as a condition of his bond.

Deputies say Petitt had thousands of child porn images.

Officials say he is a former teacher at Broad Creek Middle School. We are told he last worked there full-time in December 2008.

Carteret County school officials say since December 2008, Pettit has been substitute teacher in their system. There is no word what schools he has been a substitute at, but school officials do say he has not been at Broad Creek in that time.

They also say the did background checks regularly, and Pettit always cleared them. They report he was taken off the substitute list Thursday.

Carteret County school officials also say law enforcement reports there is no evidence any of the images involved their students.

The Department of Homeland Security and the NC State Bureau of Investigation were involved in the arrest.

Pettit has been charged with two counts of second degree sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of third degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Carteret County Sheriff’s Lt. Deborah Stevens said the charges stemmed from Pettit downloading, copying, and possessing countless images of child pornography from the internet.

"I am confused and obviously, so are you. What parents and kids has this affected? He is an amazing human being and educator...enough said." You actually said this....GREAT!.....send your kids over to his place to hangout for the weekend then. Unfortunately good people sometimes do bad things. This guy just undid all the good he has accomplished, if any. Now he is simply scum. PLEASE come near my child Mr Petit.

What does him being a good teacher have to do with him being arrested for child pornography? If it is illegal, which it is, than it is illegal. Why are you former students or friends in denial? You should be mad that he is still around your kids. It was noted on the broadcast tonight there were thousands of child Porno pics. Massive amounts! If you think this is ok, then you have issues as well.

I was looking up lawnmower blades in a search engine today and noticed 2 porn sites came up and it would have been easy for anyone even a kid to have clicked on either one of them. This mess has got to be stopped the sooner the better.I am a Christian person and I'M appalled at this tactic.

You can comment on a former teacher charged...but not on a former cop. Oh...that's right the cop is a "hero".

Statistics show only 2% of child molesters can be rehabilitated. Scary huh? You need to know where these people are located in your community. For 2 years there was a convicted child molester in our backyard in Stella. Feet from a school bus stop. Was NOT registered but we found out and reported him. Gone soon after. Should NEVER have been there. We had 3 very young children VERY close to his residence.

Saw a similar story not long ago where something dealing with a teacher was arrested for the same charges. Come to find out they had a unsecured internet network and their down stairs neighbor was actually the one whom was downloading these pictures to his computer but using her wireless people please secure your networks.

Mr. Pettit was my former teacher in middle school. He was a great teacher and never would lay a hand on any student. Just because he downloaded pictures doesn't mean he is a criminal. They should be catching the people that produce such content for download.
