ATF, SBI Help Investigate Fire At Bath Church

Federal and state investigators have joined in the probe into a fire Wednesday night at a Beaufort County church.

The fire happened Wednesday at Christian Chapel Church of Christ on South White Post Road in Bath around 6:00 pm.

Bath Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Taylor says a member of the church discovered the fire after arriving to set up for a meeting.

Taylor says the fire was near the back of the church near the kitchen and was already out when they got there. He is labeling it suspicious right now because they can't determine how it started.

The actual fire damage was confined to the kitchen, while there was smoke damage throughout the church.

Thursday morning agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms, the SBI and sheriff investigators were at the church.

Did someone leave a candle burning? And it burned itself out?

I sure wished the SBI would open the case of Mount Olive Pentecostal Church fire that happened a few years ago in Belhaven, NC. I cannot believe no has been charged and/or arrested in that case. Friendly suggestion: You need to go back and interview those you talked to in the beginning. I'm hearing specific questions were no asked is the reason why the truth did not come out. It would not be a bad idea to polygraph the head!!!
