Fence Stolen From Cemetery

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office is investigating a stolen fence from an old family cemetery east of Ayden.

Doug Stokes says someone stole the iron fence surrounding the Edward Stokes Cemetery on Highway 102 Thursday night. He says there are 10 graves there, although no one has been buried there since the 1940s.

Stokes says the family graveyard doesn't look right without the fence, and isn't sure it will be replaced due to cost.

my guess would be that someone whom knows the value of an antique iron fence stole it and took it too Raleigh to sell for quite a bit more than scrap prices. ive seen the competition at auctions over these items; and i have a name in mind from past experience and to the family i am calling the pitt county sheriff and dropping a hint. this particular individual is known to steal antique iron fence. hope it helps.

This is to the people that are commenting on this article. Your postings are very disrespectable. Shame on all of you. You talk of the prices of metal, crack, and off the wall stuff. You should have been thinking about what the family of this people was feeling about degrading the cemetery plots. The fence was put there for a purpose, it matters to the family and friends, regardly of any recent burials in the plot. This is the lowest kind of stealing on record, stealing from the dead and making a profit. I surely hope it was worth it to you and that the person you sold the fence to remembers this article and turns you in to the law. That purchase should be easy for them to remember and they make a record of who sells what to them, the amount paid for the metal, and date. There will be justice for the Stokes family in the future.

They must not have gotten much for it, scrap metal isn't worth much. The bigger problem....how will they keep the bodies from getting out at night and eating people's brains??
