UPDATE: Man Charged For Wreck That Killed Wife

The Highway Patrol says a man has been charged in the wreck that killed his wife.

Troopers say Kevin Higgins is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and exceeding a safe speed for the conditions. The crash on Highway 258 in Onslow County on July 31 claimed the life of Sandra Higgins of Raeford. She was 37 years old.

Troopers say the road was wet after a brief, heavy downpour.

Investigators say a pick-up truck driven by the victim's husband, Kevin HIggins, crossed the center turn lane on Highway 258 between Koonce Fork and Gregory Fork roads. An Infiniti S-U-V then hit the passenger's side of Higgin's vehicle.

Previous Story:
A woman was killed in a two vehicle wreck Sunday evening in Onslow county.

Trooper J.L. Morton tells WITN News that Sandra Higgins, 37, of Raeford, NC was killed.

Investigators say a pick-up truck driven by the victim's husband, Kevin HIggins, crossed the center turn lane on Highway 258 between Koonce Fork and Gregory Fork roads. An Infiniti S-U-V then hit the passenger's side of Higgin's vehicle.

Sandra Higgins was pinned in the collision and died as a result of that wreck according to Morton.

Charges are pending at this time. Morton says alcohol nor speed seemed to be factor.

I know this family very personally. It is definitely trajedy and never ending grieving moment all of for them. Not only was Kevin Higgins a great husband to Sandra and good father to their daughters. He is an excellent 82D Airborne Soldier, whom I have had the honor to fight and serve our Nation beside several times in Afghanistan and Iraq. From enlisted to Chief Waarant Officer 3, dedicated, profound leader, mentor and a excellent friend. The justice system will prevail in his family faith to clear him from all charges. Yes "Accidents" do happen and people honest mistakes in life. However nothing like this does for any reason or God's will. Unforseen events took place for the worst, nothing more! Sandra I know you are in a better place and you will always be missed. We love you dearly sister and you will never be forgotten. The Lord is our savor and he will continue take care of you. God bless your soul always. Jayte

So the fellow in Vanceboro last week crosses the centerline while reaching for his cup of coffee and kills the 62 year old beloved grandfather but ONLY gets charged for crossing centerline?

The story clearly states: Charges are pending at this time. Morton says alcohol nor speed seemed to be factor.... So how can they possibly charge him with anything? The roads were wet and he probably just lost control of the vehicle!!! As if this man and his entire family isn't going through enough already!!! What a screwed up justice system we have! Murderers walk the streets everyday but this man is being charged for the death of his wife over a ACCIDENT!!!!!!!

It looks like they will try to pin something on anyone these days. This man is going to have to live with causing the death of his wife for the rest of his life. Now they are going to make sure it gets put on his record. I'm sure that will help him when any new job prospect do a background check.

He's not being charged with murdering his wife. He's being charged with a misdemeanor death by motor vehicle which will bar anyone else from charging him with something more serious. It is a tragedy. My heart goes out to this family. It does seem like a slap in the face but it will provide closure.

I'm at a loss for words. How can this be?? This man is going to live with this the rest of his life. He should not be charged with anything. It was an ACCIDENT!! With this law, we better ride by ourselves all the time b/c if some terrible accident were to happen this could be our fate. What a SCREWED UP SYSTEM we have!

Someone please help me understand this. Florida update. A lady kills her 2 year old daughter, throws her in a nearby swamp, constantly lies to the authorities for months and she is not charged with anything. This man accidently causes his wife's death and they are ready to charge him with murder. There is nothing the law can do to this man that he will not do to himself. This was a very sad accident and my heart goes out to him and his family.

It was'nt like he was driving drunk. I feel bad for the man to find out his wife was dead on some accident. Apparently these DA's have no remorse and should be voted out cause all they are worried about is their ego and getting another vote. Thoughts and prayers go out to the whole family.

I just don't understand why someone needs to be criminally charged when the emotional turmoil is greater than anything else that can be done to this poor man. If the District Attorneys are going to do this, then they need to start charging these parents with felony neglect when their children drown in their backyard pools.

Your comment is so very true!! Why would they even think of charging him, but the system seems to fail charging the real criminals in this state. The DA should be charged for being a JERK..
