NEW INFO: Fatal Plane Crash In The East

A man in the east is dead after he crashed his plane into a field.

Trooper James Chappell says the 59-year-old pilot from Moyock crashed a single engine plane in Currituck County about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on farmland near Cooper Garrett and South Mills Roads.

The Highway Patrol says Jarvis Martin of Moyock was killed in the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to arrive later today to investigate.

The FAA says the 2-seater single engine plane is an Aviat A-1 and was built in 1996.

Chappell says the pilot had flown for years and had a landing strip on his property where he took off to observe his crops.

Things happen w/ airplanes just like accidents happen w/ cars. It could have been a health consideration, or a mechanical malfuction. Sorry for the loss of a good pilot.

Sounds more like he was attempting to make an emergency landing. The way the article reads it makes it sound like he crashed on purpose
