A fire in Pitt County has claimed the life of a family pet.
The fire happened around 9:45 p.m. Monday at a home on Johnson Lane in downtown Winterville.
The people who live there were not home at the time. Fire officials say a dog inside did not survive.
The home sustained extensive damage from smoke and heat. The Red Cross is helping the family. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
