FEMA Disaster Recovery Center Open In Bertie County

A FEMA Disaster Recovery Center opened in Bertie county Thursday afternoon and within minutes the building was packed with people.

People who lost all their possessions, their homes, or their businesses from the recent tornadoes were heading into the center to see what kind of federal relief they could receive. We talked with one woman who said the tornado ripped through her stables damaging almost everything and killing one of her horses. She says she desperately needs help now because her business and livelihood were destroyed.

"In our situation it feels pretty hopeless, I don't know what we are going to do," said Leah Newsome.

She was just one of many who lost almost everything during the storm.

Affected residents and business owners can begin the disaster application process by registering online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362)
