Elks: "There's A New Sheriff In Town, I'm Coming After You"

It's been a busy first week for new Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks.

Elks sat down with the media Monday afternoon to talk about the crimes in the area since he took the oath of office.

Elks says since day one he's been working with his administration, unifying his department and staying on top of the nationwide search for 12 year-old Brittany Smith from Virginia who was found in California Friday with a former Ayden resident.

On Friday, Elks says investigators uncovered a stolen property ring. So far, they found more than $30,000 worth of stolen property, including lawn mowers and four-wheelers.

Elks says suspects would steal from one person and sell to another, who would then sell it again. He says it was an operation that went undetected for months.

Elks says he's not content with the arrests that have been made and says he's sending a message to criminals: "Beware there's a new sheriff in town, I'm coming after you."

So glad I live in Beaufort County... Sometimes people who are put in positiions of power allow it to effect/affect their egos....

To Susan.... I am not knocking Elks I supported him.. I was just saying that he should give his Deputies credit... and not start off in that "I did" attitude... Only ment as constructive critisism

It is appropriate for the Sheriff to make the news release and take "credit". The "good" "bad" and "ugly" will ultimately rest on his desk and shoulders. Mr. Elks was a deputy prior to his new role and he knows about the work and dedication that goes into any arrest. My hope and prayer is that Pitt County as a whole will benefit from his leadership. I personally know several hard working deputies and the Department is standing proud behind this man. We law abiding citizens would be wise to do the same. Thank you for listening....just a taxpaying - law abiding citizens view on the situation.

I agree with (For God's Sake), Neil you need to look at politics 12 years ago. All that (I am the man attitude) that Vandiford had did not get him anywhere. Vandiford always got on TV and said what "HE" did... Truth is Vandiford was telling what our dedicated Deputies did while he was at home safe and asleep and he heard it the next day. My bet is when these people were arrested Elks was not even around.... so the comment should have been "Theres a new Sheriff in town and my Deputies are STILL coming after you, Have a nice day". Lets give praise where it should go to the Deputies instead of letting administration take the glory for all the hard work

Do we have to hear you toot your own horn another 207 times in the 4 next years? I feel like we are revisiting the sheriff we had 12 years ago. Do the taxpayers a favor; take care of business and keep us safe. Weekly press releases is a waste of our tax money and just wasted wind on babble. It's a wonder any of staff can get past your ego to their desk.
