IRVING, Texas - East Carolina senior Zach Woods was named Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week league officials announced Monday. For Woods it is his second career honor and ECU's third of the season (Seth Maness/Mar. 7, Kevin Brandt/Mar. 21).
Woods set the tone for the Pirates' (34-17) impressive week on the mound, tossing six shutout innings against Wake Forest on May 11 in a 9-0 victory, then ECU’s seventh shutout of the season.
The right-hander scattered four hits, walked two and struck out four (all swinging) en route to his second win of the year. This season he has fanned 34, walked 12 and has allowed 15 runs (12 earned) on 37 hits in 36.2 innings for a 2.95 ERA.
On the week, the Pirates pitching staff posted a 0.50 ERA in four games allowing just two runs on 24 hits in 36.0 innings with six strikeouts. In the series opener against Delaware State, ECU registered its eighth shutout (24-0) of the year the most since recording nine 2004.
With just four games remaining in the regular season, the Pirates will play their home finale against former Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion on Tuesday, May 17 with a 6 p.m. (EDT) first pitch scheduled.
