GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina sophomore defensive lineman Matt Milner has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 First Team, according to an announcement Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America. A physics major, Milner earned the initial academic all-district award of his career with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. By making the first team, he is eligible for Capital One Academic All‐America honors.
Milner, who redshirted during his first year with the Pirate football program, was named to the 2010 Conference USA All-Academic Team. He has also been selected to C-USA’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll twice and received a pair of Commissioner’s Academic Medals.
The Raleigh native was the football program’s Jerry T. Brooks Academic Achievement Award winner a year ago and is a four-time ECU Chancellor’s List honoree. Milner was one of East Carolina’s 2010 winners of the Merck General Chemistry Achievement Award, which is presented to the top students who have gone through ECU's CHEM 1150/1160 General Chemistry Track. He was among six chosen from approximately 600 students based on grade-point average and results of the American Chemical Society's first semester general chemistry standardized exam.
On the field this season, Milner is serving as a starting defensive end for the second-straight campaign. He has booked 26 tackles with eight solo hits. Last Saturday versus Southern Miss, he tallied a season second-best five tackles and made four hits in the opening quarter. He recovered his third career fumble during the second quarter against UAB and registered his first quarterback hurry of the season during the initial series of the contest against the Blazers. During the matchup with Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech, Milner finished two tackles short of career high with six hits and was credited with two half tackles for lost yardage.
To be eligible for the Capital One Academic All-District Football Teams, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution. No student-athlete is eligible until he has completed one full calendar year at his current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Milner and the Pirates (4-5, 3-2 C-USA) return to action Saturday with an 8:05 p.m. (ET) contest at UTEP (4-5, 1-4 C-USA). East Carolina is looking for its first three-game road winning streak since 2007 and securing its seventh consecutive non-losing league slate.
