IRVING, Texas - East Carolina senior Austin Homan was named to the 2011 Conference USA All-Academic Team, as selected by the league's baseball sports information directors. In order to be eligible for the recognition, student-athletes must hold a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be of at least sophomore academic standing and be a starter of key reserve for their team.
Homan, who holds the distinct honor of being the only two-time recipient of the Honorary No. 23 jersey, which was worn by former ECU skipper Keith LeClair, is a five-time Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient and 2011 Commissioner's Academic Medal Winner and has been named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll for 11 consecutive semesters. Last year he earned his bachelor’s degree in sport studies and is currently pursuing his master’s in recreation and park management where he boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Between the lines, Homan has started 10 of 26 games played in 2011 where he is batting .222 (12-for-54) with a home run, nine RBI and eight runs scored. Against Delaware State he drove in a season-high three runs after belting his second career home run at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Homan, a two-time team captain and three-year letterwinner, has appeared in 130 games logging 60 starts where he sports a career average of .302 with 61 RBI and 52 runs scored. He has recorded 16 multi-hit and 12 multi-RBI games during his four-year stint with the Pirates.
The Pirates (37-18) are in Pearl, Miss. for the 2011 Conference USA Championship will get underway on Wednesday, May 25. As the third seed, ECU will square off with sixth seed Houston in game one at 5 p.m. (EDT) on Wednesday before playing No. 7 Tulane (May 26 at 5 p.m.) and No. 2 Southern Miss (May 27 at 8:30 p.m.).
