ECU Trustees Okay Hefty Tuition Hike

East Carolina University trustees met Friday morning and gave their okay to a hefty tuition hike that is being proposed for students.

The tuition hike proposal now goes to the UNC Board of Governors. The hike is 9.5% for in-state undergrads and 9.9% for everyone else.

If approved, tuition and fees for in-state undergrads would go up $505, while for out-of-state undergrads it would be a $1,740 hike.

The General Assembly will eventually have to give their okay to the tuition hike as well.

It seems to me instead of begging alumni for 15 million for a practice facility for the nearly non existent basketball program the money would be best used to help educate students , the mission of the university in the first place. ECU also needs to put to bed all these crazy pipe dreams of BCS bowls ! ECU needs to realize who they are and what they are and stop living in a dream world. Colleges all over this nation have fallen for the money grab of big time college athletics and all the ones similar to ECU realize way to late that they threw hundreds of millions away for an impossible dream! wake up ECU concentrate on academics! What has all the athletic spending gotten you so far? NOTHING a losing football team 5-7 this year,6-7 last year ! There are 35 bowls now every one goes but wait not ECU even with all this spending they lost over and over again! hmmm back in 92' 11-1 ranked #9 in the nation with a 36,000 seat stadium! just saying people! Hey AD Holland go ask Oklahoma State, even T. Boone Pickens who spent a mint on OSU athletics could not get them in the BCS championship over traditional power Alabama! Wake up ECU! and before you people say it, I graduated from ECU twice, I am a pirate fan but I am also a realist! The U.S. economy is in an awful mess, ECU must remember if you put your alumni base deep in debt while they are in college how will they ever afford to be pirate club or alumni association members? just sayin'

ECU continues to pour money into unnecessary things such as a drag queen contest and a lesbian and gay center.

Riiiight. Federal employees making nearly twice as much on average than their private sector counter parts has nothing to do with this. Blame the gays if you want to but there's a bigger problem...girlfriend!

I've never even stepped foot in a College and I guarantee I make 3 times as much as the average person that has a College Degree. You don't need a Degree to be successful, just goals and persistence. I've never been able to understand why someone would pay 15 to 30 to 40 thousand dollars a year just to learn how to get out of College and work for someone else. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Now how am I supposed to pay for my child's college tuition. She barely got enough in her student loan to cover tuition at the current rate and that doesn't even cover ANY books. Book money comes out of my pocket. Good grief....
