GREENVILLE, N.C. – Colleen Marshall has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for and attend East Carolina University beginning in the fall of 2012, according to an announcement by head coach Heather Macy Thursday.
Marshall is a three-star recruit according to ESPN Hoopgurlz and is ranked among the nation’s top 150 guards. She is especially recognized for her outside shooting prowess.
"We are very proud to welcome Colleen Marshall to the East Carolina women's basketball family," Macy said. "We are excited about her ability to shoot the basketball. Colleen will add scoring and that winning tradition to our program. She brings character and has a terrific family and support system. I am very excited for her to join our team."
Marshall has been a starter and captain for Gaithersburg (Md.) High School the past three seasons and was a key component in helping the Lady Panthers capture their first state championship this past campaign as the team produced a 26-0 record. She averaged 12.1 points, five assists and four rebounds per contest in 2010-11 and scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter of the class 4A championship against Dr. Henry Wise, Jr. In her first three seasons with the program, Gaithersburg has amassed a record of 68-8.
"I chose East Carolina because it has everything I am looking for academically and athletically," Marshall said to ESPN Hoopgurlz. "I am also looking forward to playing in a great conference."
A 5-9 guard, Marshall was named Second Team All-Montgomery County Gazette and was an All-Met honorable mention selection after her junior season. Gaithersburg was ranked No. 3 in the final women’s basketball poll published by The Washington Post.
During her sophomore campaign, Marshall earned Washington Post Montgomery 4A All-League First-Team and honorable mention Montgomery County Gazette accolades. The Lady Panthers were ranked No. 7 by The Washington Post at season’s end as Gaithersburg reached the class 4A final. The squad was a class 4A semifinalist her freshman season and Marshall picked up another honorable mention nod by the Gazette.
Her basketball experience is not limited to just the prep ranks, however, as Marshall gained valuable playing time within the AAU circuit. She helped the Germantown Lady Panthers to Potomac Valley regional championships from 2005-09 as well as the program’s U14 team to a third-place finish at the AAU Division I national tournament in 2009. Marshall was also a part of the U13 squad which came in fifth at the same tournament in 2008.
"East Carolina University is getting a great student-athlete in Colleen Marshall," Germantown head coach Milton Kimbrough stated. "She will help Coach Macy continue her strive for excellence. Colleen is poised to do great things for ECU."
In addition to basketball, Marshall has earned varsity letters in two other sports during her time at Gaithersburg – one each in varsity volleyball (2009) and lacrosse (2010). Academically, she holds a 3.85 cumulative GPA and has earned honor roll status every semester.
