GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women’s golf team fired rounds of 292 and 291 and currently lead the 2011 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate with a 7-over par 583 Monday afternoon. The two-day, 54-hole event is being played at the par-72, 6,056-yard Greenville Country Club.
The Pirates (23-1) enter Tuesday’s action with a two-shot lead over instate foe UNC Greensboro (294-291=585) and are five strokes ahead of 2010 Lady Pirate Tournament champs Maryland (293-295=588). Rounding out the top five are UNC Wilmington (300-291=591) and Georgia State (293-299=592).
Sitting atop the individual leaderboard are UNCG’s Fanny Cnops (69-70=139) and UNCW’s Laverry Kumar (72-67=139) who are both tied at 5-under par. Furman’s Laura Wearn (71-69=140) and ECU’s Amy Otteson (69-71=140) are tied for third, while Old Dominion’s Samantha Morrell (71-70=141) is in fifth.
Morrell, who finished tied for third at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in 2010, had one of the best shots of the day when she posted a double-eagle on the par-5, 435-yard 18th hole during her second round. But she was outdone when Georgetown’s Eunae Jo recorded an ace on the par-3, 148-yard 15th hole in her second round. Jo’s hole-in-one is the first ever during the Pirates’ 11-year event.
ECU sophomore Fanny Wolte (75-72=147/t-17th) and freshman Katie Kirk (75-73=148/t-20th) join Otteson among the top 20. Senior Julia Strandberg is tied for 26th after posting rounds of 74 and 75, while junior Faith Hardison (79-74) sits in a tie for 46th. Playing as individuals for the Pirates are the freshman duo of Emily Eng (79-78=157/t-71st) and Devan Murphy (93-95=178/103rd).
Ten golfers head into final round action at even-par or better and during the first day, nine posted rounds of 69 or lower with Kumar’s 67 (second round) leading the way.
